The Old Republic Starfighter Expansion Open for Free-to-Play

Back in October 2013 we reported on the second digital expansion for The Old Republic MMO Galactic Starfighter, which launched for Subscribers two months later in December. As of the 4th of February, it’s now open to the Free-to-Play players. Not only does this expansion include the ever alluring starfighting aspect, but you’ll find a new Flashpoint (think story-missions) centered around Kuat Drive Yards! Bioware is celebrating the expansion’s launch to free-to-play members with the above video, which gives you a look at all the incredible, and now free, content available in TOR today!

Dogfights Fly Into The Old Republic

The second digital expansion pack for The Old Republic MMO forgets the petty squabbling of Hutts and planetary issues and goes straight for the stars. Galactic Starfighter adds Player versus Player (PvP) dogfighting matches to the MMO’s litany of things to do with some hectic 12v12 action. While TOR previously had outer space battles, they were more on-rails and limited than anything else. Now, with the new expansion, the cold vacuum of space is yours to patrol and conquer against other players. Customize and upgrade your ship and fight through multiple locations/gameplay modes with the expansion pack that looks too good to be true. The only caveat with Galactic Starfighter is the when you’ll get it.

Hutt Cartel Releases Media of Makeb

When the Hutt Cartel expansion for The Old Republic was announced in early December last year, there were only a few screenshots accompanying it. Just last week BioWare finally unveiled a teaser trailer (seen above) for the new content, showcasing more of the new planet Makeb. It also comes with threats about as subtle as a Wookiee hiding in a pack of Jawas, but I’m just disappointed the Hutt Cartel didn’t issue this warning: Play our expansion or else it gets the Sarlacc Pit. Battle Hutt Cartel in Upcoming Old Republic Expansion

Hutttastic

Coming off the heels of the recently released free-to-play option, The Old Republic will soon be receiving its first digital expansion: Rise of the Hutt Cartel. With five new levels and a new planet, it’s up to you to discover why the Hutts plan on forcing the entire galaxy to wear the Slave Leia outfit. Actually, the expansion focuses on the Hutt Cartel’s attempt to reign supreme over the entire galaxy (but if they do take over, my scenario doesn’t sound that far off, does it?) Read more

Star Wars: The Old Republic Now Free-To-Play

Times are tough and video gaming isn’t exactly the cheapest hobby. But fret not, my fellow thrifty Star Wars fans, there’s a solution to that problem: the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has recently launched a free-to-play option. It’s so free, you click right HERE and start your adventure without reading any further. But, all free things come at some price (not monetarily, of course) so read on if you want the skinny on what you’ll get for free. Read more

Review: The Old Republic Encyclopedia

I’ve been looking forward to reading this publication ever since I heard about it. The Old Republic era has become the one that I’m most interested in, and I can thank the game Knights of the Old Republic for that. Sure, the Clone Wars era continues to entertain me, but nothing appeals to me more than a vast era spanning thousands of years and full of interesting plots and memorable characters.

While I have not played The Old Republic, I have kept up with the trailers, news and first hand reports from some of those who have played it. Technical aspects aside, it sounds like a pretty cool game, set in the era that shares its name. To aid players and to provide an entertaining and informative resource for those interested in the era such as myself, DK Publishing has produced The Old Republic Encyclopedia.

It should come as no surprise that this book is beautifully illustrated inside and out. DK publications are simply the best when it comes to eye-catching, fully illustrated books. The fully illustrated outside cover is itself covered by an attractive dust jacket. Inside the book is a feast for the eyes. The book contains incredible art, screenshots from The Old Republic game, and illustrations of characters, planets, weapons and much more.

The Old Republic Encyclopedia is made up of several sections.

Introduction

The Republic

The Jedi Order

The Sith Empire

The Sith

Mandalorians

The Underworld

The Hutt Cartel

Species

Planets

Introduction: Includes a brief look at the current state of the galaxy, and an impressive timeline featuring key events during the Old Republic. c.30,000 BBY all the way to 3,640 BBY.

The Republic: From before the founding of the Republic, to the battles against the Sith, from weapons to military hierarchy, this section gives a comprehensive look at the galaxy-spanning government.

The Jedi Order: Want to know the origins of the Jedi? Their roles, training, weapon use and place in the Old Republic? Then this section is for you.

The Sith Empire: This section describes the workings of the government led by the Sith. The Imperial fleet, military, weapons and intelligence and overall organizational structure are shown here.

The Sith: Much like the Jedi Encyclopedia entry, this section too covers the origin of the Sith, as well as the Sith Emperor, training, the Dark Council, inquisitors and other key features of this destructive society.

Mandalorians: This is a brief section when compared to the others, but it does discuss who this culture is, along with allies, combat and armor.

The Underworld: Across the galaxy there is a corrupt society made up of gangsters, thieves, and even powerful criminal organizations such as The Exchange and Black Sun. Smugglers and bounty hunters such as Shae Vizla thrive in such an environment. This section highlights these organizations, along with the weapons, armor and ships that keep it strong and dangerous.

The Hutt Cartel: Hutts are known to be vile gangsters, but what may not be widely known is that they have been around for thousands of years, and were in fact brilliant military strategists and conquerors.

Species: A look at many of the life forms that make the Old Republic their home.

Planets: A look at key planets during the time of the Old Republic, including Korriban, Taris and even Hoth.

I considered myself fairly educated this era, but after reading the Encyclopedia, I came to realize that much to learn I still had.

Bottom line, anyone who is interested in the Old Republic, and not just the online game but also the era, should buy this book. For those not familiar with either, The Old Republic Encyclopedia is the perfect publication to get you up to speed with the essentials.

Cover blurb:

Star Wars: The Old Republic is an entirely new Star Wars story to explore. It is a dark and troubled age over 3,600 years before the rise of Darth Vader, in which the Jedi and Sith prepare to battle and decide the fate of the galaxy.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia is an unprecedented visual companion to this complex world. Written by a team of writers from the game and created in close collaboration with Lucasfilm, LucasArts, and BioWare, the book reveals a wealth of new material on characters, weapons, equipment, vehicles, history, and locations.

DISCLOSURE: I received a copy of this book from the publisher at no charge in order to provide a review. However, this did not affect the overall review content. All opinions are my own.

The Sith Empire is in flux. The Emperor is missing, presumed dead, and an ambitious Sith lord’s attempt to seize the throne has ended fatally. Still, Darth Karrid, commander of the fearsome Imperial battle cruiser Ascendant Spear, continues her relentless efforts to achieve total Sith domination of the galaxy.

But Karrid’s ruthless determination is more than matched in the steely resolve of Theron Shan, whose unfinished business with the Empire could change the course of the war for good. Though the son of a Jedi master, Theron does not wield the Force—but like his renowned mother, the spirit of rebellion is in his blood. As a top covert agent for the Republic, he struck a crucial blow against the Empire by exposing and destroying a Sith superweapon arsenal—which makes him the ideal operative for a daring and dangerous mission to end Ascendant Spear’s reign of terror.

Joined by hot-headed smuggler Teff’ith, with whom he has an inexplicable bond, and wise Jedi warrior Gnost-Dural, Darth Karrid’s former master, Theron must match wits and weapons with a battle-tested crew of the most cold-blooded dark side disciples. But time is brutally short. And if they don’t seize their one chance to succeed, they will surely have countless opportunities to die.

Drew Karpyshyn Talks ANNIHILATION

Author Drew Karpyshyn has given us some insight into his upcoming novel The Old Republic: Annihilation, due out November 13, 2012. Link

Republic agent Theron Shan and his Twi’lek compadre, Teff’ith must contend with a Sith Empire counter-attack against the Republic, spearheaded by the lethal apprentice of Darth Malgus. Satele Shan and Jace Malcom co-star in what will be a fast-paced and tension-fraught tale based on the award-winning video game from BioWare and LucasArts.

It’s a bit vague, but that’s the problem when you try to stay spoiler free. But I think I can add a bit more without ruining anything. It’s a stand alone story – it has no connection to Revan, and it doesn’t tie in directly with any of the storylines from the SWTOR video game, though it is set in that era. It actually takes place just after the events of the game, and the novel will reflect the Empire and the Republic as they stand at the end of the game’s storylines. (I won’t say anymore to avoid spoiling people who play the game but aren’t finished.)

The game features Theron Shan, a character who first appeared in the Lost Suns Dark Horse graphic novels, written by Alex Freed – my former co-worker at BioWare and the lead writer for SWTOR.

Annihilation is a little different than my other Star Wars books. The Bane trilogy focused on Darth Bane, one of the most powerful Sith Lords who ever lived. Revan obviously focused on Revan, another incredibly powerful Force user. Annihilation is different, because the main character is not a Jedi or Sith. Theron Shan, despite being a descendant of Revan and Bastila, isn’t Force sensitive. That makes for a very different type of novel, and a very different type of main character.

That doesn’t make Theron any less interesting, of course. My personal favorite character in the original trilogy is Han Solo, and I think he’s a good example of how you can be a hero and change the galaxy even if you can’t call on the Force at will.

That’s not to say Theron is an “ordinary” guy: he’s a highly trained field agent working for Republic Strategic Information Services. He has a number of cybernetic implants, along with a host of customized weapons and gadgets, and he’s supplemented his SIS training with his own ecclectic and esoteric studies. Sort of like Batman. Or Jason Bourne. Or James Bond. But in Star Wars.

So let’s call Annihiliaton an action-spy-thriller-sci-fi-epic set in the Star Wars universe. If that doesn’t make you want to buy it, nothing will.
